God-Conscience Cleaning, Living, BEING...

As a homemaker and as a woman, I can sometimes get into the mindset of, "is what I do at home really worth anything? Who sees what I do?" I'm guessing that at one time or another we've all felt this way, be you a homemaker, a business woman or just a woman! Questions may arise such as, "does anyone see the trouble I go through to do..." or "what would happen if I stopped doing it altogether? Would anything really change?" I'm guessing so, but does that make us feel any better? I'm guessing not.

I love the quote in the movie "Shall We Dance" spoken by Susan Sarandon. She says, "We need a witness to our lives. There's a billion people on the planet... I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you're promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things... all of it, all of the time, every day. You're saying 'Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness'." I love it and it certainly is a romantic idea, but let's face it- whether you're married to a wonderful guy (& I am!), dating a great guy, or live in close relationship with your family or friends...nobody will notice everything about you. It's not possible! And isn't that what we all want? To be noticed, loved, appreciated, praised & known? I have a sneaky suspicion I'm right. But hey, there's hope!

I read a fantastic excerpt from a book of mine called "His Victorious Indwelling" that seems to shed just the right amount of light on this subject. It says:

"Amid the pressures of daily life, trust the Holy Spirit, who is emphatically the Divine Remembrancer, to bring all things to your remembrance, and to recall you to the consciousness of God. There is no duty in life, however trivial and commonplace, that may not be dignified by being rendered to God, as our bounden duty and service. This is indeed the secret of lifting all life to a noble and happy elevation. To do all for the Lord Jesus; to see Him standing behind every human relationship; to do the meanest and most irksome things because He takes them as service rendered to Himself, for which He will give a reward- this is Christian life, this makes the presence of God real, this dignifies the sweeping of a room...Equally in our hours of recreation we may set the Lord always before us. Remember that it is said of the elders of Israel that they saw Jehovah, and there was under his feet as it were the paved work of a sapphire stone (Ex. 24:9-11); they beheld God, and did eat and drink. How many eat and drink without beholding God! How many whose consciences were uneasy might behold God without daring to eat and drink! Happiest are they who are so at rest in Him that they do not hesitate to perform the natural functions of life with perfect ease, though all the while they recognize that He is nearer than hands of feet, nearer than breathing! The sense of God's presence would check immodesty, levity, self-indulgence, excess in eating or drinking, whilst it would give a new zest to all that was natural and innocent." - F.B. Meyer

So carry on with your work and pleasure- you are not alone! You are known, and incredibly worth it!

Gotta Love a Bargain!

If you've ever been on a hard-core bargain hunt, you'll be able to relate to the following story.

It was a crisp Saturday morning. Matthew and I had decided the day before that we would go estate and garage saling. (FYI definition of "Saling"- the act of floating from sale to sale at no particular speed but that which is desirable to you.)I had mapped out our route the afternoon before so we were all set to go. At least I thought so. 4 Frappes and 4 bagels later, we were on our way.

What were we looking for? Matthew and I like to do what we call "turn-around sales". It's where you find something of value at a garage sale or online auction for a great bargain, then turn around and sell it again to someone who is willing to pay what it's truly worth. We've done this numerous times with Craigslist, etc. It's really fun! It's more than a hobby than a necessity for us, but it's also a good lesson in the wonderful world of investing, but on a smaller scale. And of course, no hunt would be complete without a treasured item found along the way to keep! But more on that later. Anywho, back to the hunt!

Sale #1: garage sale. Ya know, garage sales are a funny thing. Here you are rummaging through other people's belongings for a quarter that they don't want anymore and all the while they are staring you down (at least at most sales) to see what unwanted item you are going to relieve them of. It's quite funny actually! And I must say, not for the prideful if you know what I mean. But in the end, the old saying stays true, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." So true! After finding a few of these "treasures" along the way, we were onto the serious sales: Estate sales.

Estate saling: here's where it gets good. Normally with an estate sale someone is downsizing, retiring, or has deceased. It's an open house where you walk through like a retail store and usually anything you see is for sale...and if you know what you're doing, you'll negotiate. This is the fun part in my opinion. For instance, you say, "I noticed you had this listed for $5, will you take $3? If they say yes (and they usually do), you just knocked off $2 bucks! Negotiation done. :) I like estate sales the best because it's the best place to find antiques or vintage items, which if you know me you're aware that I'm a fan. Today I found a beautiful vintage linen tablecloth + 8 matching napkins in great condition and at a real bargain! Possibly my favorite buy of the day! Another thing about estate sales: it's like a mad frenzy in these places! I have to laugh inside because it's literally people rushing here and there trying to seize up somebody's old stuff before someone else gets to it. And I'm right there in the midst! I can't say I'm a six o'clock die-hard hunter (we left at about 10:20), but I can't deny I like the rush just a tad. Come on folks! It's exciting!

In the end we did quite well. Matt got a few items and so did I and we made out without spending much- mission accomplished. But you know what? There's a bit about this whole experience that truly is the best of all, and that's the time we got to spend together- just us. There we were drinking frappes, eatin' bagels, comparing bargains, singing to Nickel Creek cranked sky high and having a ball the entire time. And did I mention the people we met along the way? You'd be surprised what conversations arise with other folks when you're there sifting through their grandmother's heirlooms or family's prized glassware collection. You get to be a part of hearing their history as it is transferred into your hands. No amount of money can buy that.

So after it's all said and done, it's not about the bargains or how much we saved not having bought it from a conventional store, it's about the people. Now isn't that what it's always about? I think so.

Favorite finds of the day:

Matty's find- a solid wood file cabinet

Set of 3 vintage jello molds & a tart pan

My favorite: set of red & white vintage table linens

Another Matthew find: set of 8 silver-plated goblets

A Hymn for Him

As I was praying this morning, this Hymn came to my mind. It seemed to sum up what I was feeling and thinking, so I thought I might share it with you!

As The Deer

As the deer panteth for the water,
So my soul longs after you.
You alone are my hearts desire,
And I long to worship You.

Chorus
You alone are my strength, my shield;
To You alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my hearts desire,
and I long to worship You.

I want you more than gold or silver,
Only You can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye.

Chorus
You alone are my strength, my shield;
To You alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my hearts desire,
and I long to worship You.

You're my friend and You're my brother,
Even though you are a King.
I love You more than any other
So much more than anything.

Chorus
You alone are my strength, my shield;
To You alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my hearts desire,
and I long to worship You.

Psalm 42:1
"As the hart panteth after the water brooks,
so panteth my soul after thee, O God."

Easter Reflections

Well Easter has come and gone , but not without its share of reflection and remembrance. Something that has burned in my thoughts all weekend was a question that seemed to have come to mind starting on Good Friday. It is this: Why do we look to the world to give us Jesus? Let me back up.

Around the Easter holiday, as with all of the other spiritually significant holidays that we as believers celebrate, there is a sense of over-powering secular commercialism everywhere you go. Around Christmastime there are the Santas and reindeer that fill aisles and aisles of craft stores and shops. And at Easter you see the eggs, chicks, and bunnies all around. For some of us, me included, it can feel quite overwhelming to the point where I just want to get away from it all and focus on the true meaning of the holiday. So I busy myself with a "spiritual" event or craft. "There, that's better", I think. But then it occurred to me, Jesus doesn't live any more in a "He is Risen" banner than He lives in a silly bunny decoration or the tradition of families dying colored eggs- He lives in our hearts! And if He can be just as real and personal in the silliness of plastic eggs or the sweetness of a coconut cake, then so be it! I beat myself up too much sometimes about making sure my holidays are "spiritual" enough and feeling guilty when they don't seem to be, and I forget that Christ does not live in events or crafts, He lives in Me and You! Do I think it's more important to make a Resurrection scene over a Spring scene? I'm not the one to ask. I absolutely believe in teaching your children the story of Easter and what Christ has done for us by His death and resurrection- but the message that He came to bring us Life and Freedom! What a message to remember! And freedom in many, many forms. :) Having a wooden cross around your neck doesn't make you any more close to Him for it. Because you see, He doesn't live in symbols like churches or crosses, nor does He parade only down the aisles of "Spiritual-themed" decor- He lives in US!

So my question, "Why do we look to the world to give us Jesus?" You won't find Him there. Not truly. You need only look to the One that lives within you that died to bring you Life! And if you have not met Hm yet, you won't have to look hard...He's all around you. He's in her wrinkled smile or his helping hand. He's there, just open your eyes.

So I must ask you....what is more obvious in your life? That gladness and peace of your heart evidencing the Life that is in You, or merely symbols that decorate your life, and stop there. Something to chew on.

Keeping the Balance

When it comes to healthy living, I was beginning to think I was doing A-Okay. I have slowly and gradually begun to weed out unnecessary cleaning and beauty products that do more harm than good for me, and for the most part, eating healthfully has been one of my top priorities on our healthy regimen....until about 2 months ago. We moved. And with every busy, life-altering event that comes along, certain things do end up getting cast to the wayside. Where as before I was trying to buy things like fresh fruits and veggies and organic cereal, all of a sudden I was buying things like taco bell, Wendy's and Chinese food! Don't get me wrong...these are not bad in moderation, but we were having them about 3 or more times a week, with meals like Maruchan in-between. This went on for about a month of more, and where this kind of food is tasty to be sure, let me just say it doesn't leave you feeling the greatest. :P After we settled in and my kitchen was cleaned and put to good order, I once again fell in love with cooking! How fresh and fun it was to rediscover my cookbook collection (I have a library of cookbooks!) and to go about planning our meals out for the week. Matthew likes it when I do this...I think he just likes knowing there's gonna be food!

So, last week when I was planning our meals the thought occurred to me, "we're eating pretty well, but are we eating all the right things?" My cooking rediscovery hadn't been a bad one, but I was curious as to if we were eating a balanced diet. I did a little research online and my discovery was this: NO. We were doing well in the fruits and breads department, but the vegetable department was seriously lacking. So here I went again. Planning my menu that week took a little more thought than what appealed to our taste buds, but I'm really enjoying the new balanced diet approach. It's fun...and you know what? We both have a lot more energy than we did before. At least I do! A passage in Daniel comes to mind. :) I have included the chart below so you too can check out how you're doing and perhaps by me posting this, I will be kept accountable, too! Happy, healthy eating!

Face Play

Today seemed the perfect day for a facial. I had been working vigorously all morning on refinishing some old furniture I had bought for the guest room and was tired and saw-dusty from head to toe. It was a productive morning no doubt, but I was feeling a little bit now like spoiling myself! Play should always follow good, hard work. And so it did! After taking a nice shower, I went about getting all the ingredients together for this super-facial! (not to be confused with superficial). I've made it before and love the results! It's very simple. You take dry Aztec calcium bentonite clay (found at Whole Foods or Central Market in the beauty aisle) and organic apple cider vinegar with the "mother". Mix equal parts (I do 1/4 c. of clay + 1/4 c. cider) in a plastic or glass container. Using a plastic spatula, spread over entire face (you can do arms and neck as well for a nice clay body wrap) like you're icing a cake. It goes on quite nicely this way. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and you will actually feel your face pulsate! The negative charge in the clay helps drive out the positive charges in your skin, drawing out the toxins. The cider is good for the skin for a variety of reasons which include helping to promote blood circulation, balance pH levels, and works as an antiseptic to prevent bacteria that leads to infection. Didn't think you'd get a med lesson now did ya? Anywho, it's a wonderful facial and left me feeling smooth and healthy! Awwww...now that's play. :)

*If you decide to try this facial make sure you do it at the end of the day or have at least an hour afterwards. My face usually stays a nice, cherry red for about half an hour after. I believe it's the affects of the clay still working on my skin. After it goes down though, I'm as good as new!

It Ain't Paint Until it's on the Wall!

My my! A month goes by quickly! I was just thinking the other day that I should write a new post and then I realized it- it had already been a month since I had last written! Oops! Oh well...no pressure. I can only write as I come up with things to write about!

This last month has been busy, and for me, nesting has been in full swing. My first project was to turn some of these stark white walls into rooms of color! For about two weeks I went about painting some shelves in the kitchen, the dining room, kitchen and a small half bath. I've come to realize something- I really like painting! There's something very therapeutic about painting and when it's all said and done...it adds so much freshness and brightness to a room! And (best part) it's very inexpensive. I just went to Walmart and bought the least expensive indoor semi-gloss they had. Even though we aren't here to stay for forever, knowing it was inexpensive made me feel good about doing it. So, if you're in a style rut or need to brighten up a room...I strongly recommend it. :) And it's fun, too! If you have any painting stories you want to share, do tell!
